That is just a misconception. There is an awful lot of non-famous and cheap old art around. Same as modern art.

Let me explain. What an artist is payed for his work depends on his/her quality. Now when an artist dies the price of his/her work goes up. There will be no more of those so laws of economics come into effect. Saying that the longer someone is dead the more expensive the art isn’t absolutely true, but for famous works of art it is. Inflaton is terible in the art world. :)

Fact remains that living artists never made more money with art than today. And there are more and more artists in the world. In the old days it wasn’t easier to be famous but if you were famous you were set for life. Today you are just the flavour of the month.

Modern works of art haven’t setteled in jet like old works of art but you will see. In a 100 years or so this same stament will be true about art then. It takes time for art to become really famous, on lunch boxes, dinner plates and trays.

maybe because many hold a mystery to them and a lot of history. Also most of the artists are dead, so the uniqueness that was brought to it by that specific artist could never be recreated. The painting is one of a kind. Then its all about the demand. The more people that want it, the more it is going to cost. it’s like real estate. Unless you can find something damaging about the quality, it will never depreciate in value.

uniqueness of the work is the main value behind it.those masterpieces are the beacons of art history of humanity.its value will increase day by day.monolisa cant be repeated again only one monolisa left for the humanity.that evaluates its importance.

I think its because there were no cameras to capture such important historical pictures.

the artist is dead. he cant paint anymore. this makes his one of a kind works more valuable. that is one reason. some artists that are innovative, works in all types of mediums and is charismatic or odd in some way is more memorable after theyre dead. people dont like to boast too much of a live artist because he is still alive and can continue to put out his works. imagine he just paints his name across a canvas and someone would purchase it. he can do that all day long and that would be without purpose. an artist makes art for the sake of art. not for money in most cases. unless youre talking about production art for the masses. that’s completely different.

art in history stands the test of time, paintings are famous for different reasons such as a radical art movement such as im pressionism (around 1880s). mona lisa is famous for her cheeky grin but is also famous for leonardo da vinci. What a painting does to people is what makes it famous along with its historical content aswell. i would advise you to read the story of art by gombritch. You need to learn what makes a painting what it is and know what questions to ask about a piece of art.
