you bought a SLR camera before even reading a beginner’s book?

anyway, first, read the manual. find out what your camera can do, and start taking pictures. experiment first, then you’ll know what the book’s talking about.

maybe you can try Digital SLR photography for dummies, since you already have one.

Kodak photograph books seem to be best for beginners.

Study some art also to get some knowledge of composition.

One of the best writers at the moment is Tom Ang,his books include simple text and good pictures, his writing style is very easy to follow and he does go into the details later on as you learn more.Don’t forget the instruction book that came with your camera.

Scott Kelby has a nice book or two that will get you started in actually using your new camera to good advantage. "The Digital Photography Book". 1 and 2. These are hands-on, here’s how to set up a picture like this, use these camera settings etc etc type of books, but while following instructions you will learn.

The "Dummies" series are always good, particularly if you haven’t had much experience with digital photography before.

"Understanding Exposure", by Bryan Peterson is a must have for any amateur photographer who wants to improve his/her shooting, film or digital.

I have assumed you have a digital SLR. If film, then try to find a copy of the Kodak SLR photography book. It is out of print, but may be available on eBay or Amazon.

Good luck and have fun with your new camera!

This book won’t cover every single thing that you need to know about your SLR, but as far as techniques and tips it’s really good. I just bought it and learned quite a bit. Also, which SLR do you have? There are books I’ve seen that are just for specific models.
