Save the fabric as an Psd instead of pdf

hi, when i go to filter-distort & then enter the values you say it askd me to choose the fabric file file but i can’t. I saved the desaturated fabric as a pdf on my desktop then go back to it through the flag, but i can’t select my fabric file. do both the fabric and flag files need to be jpeg’s or how does it work?
